Eleventh Biennial ASTENE CONFERENCE
Friday 17 July – Monday 20 July, 2015 at the University of Exeter, Exeter
Papers for the conference included the themes of travelling artists who fused their unique experience into their creative work, travellers’ views on the environment and culture ranging from the Middle Ages to a comparative perspective of the present day. They also included war travels ranging from the Crimean War to the First World War, and unknown stories about well-known travellers. As this was the 20th birthday of the initial Durham Conference that eventually developed into ASTENE, this year’s conference includes a keynote speech on the Saturday evening by one of the founding members, Jason Thompson, the author of a newly published 3-volume history of Egyptology pertinently named Wonderful Things.
