ASTENE organises conferences biannually to allow for a coming together of those with an interest in early travel and early travellers in Egypt and the Near East. These conferences are popular events, attracting attendees from around the world and the society disseminates the research presented at these gatherings by publishing a selection of the papers after each conference (see: Conference Proceedings).

At every bi-annual ASTENE Conference three (3) bursaries are available to existing ASTENE student members, to students newly joining ASTENE, and to non-members who must join to ASTENE to attend the Conference. Each of the bursaries covers the full conference costs, including accommodation and meals but not travel costs.
Recipients of a bursary must offer a paper to be read at the Conference, and will also have roles in the conference organisation, such as assisting at the registration desk, manning the bookstall, providing IT and technical support to those giving papers, assisting as necessary.
After the Conference bursary recipients will be asked to write a 750-1000 word piece giving their impressions to serve as a record of the event for publication in the quarterly ASTENE Bulletin.
If you wish to apply for a bursary, please see the 2017 bursary form as a guide for future applications (our next conference is in 2019).
